Special Education Eligibility |
A comprehensive evaluation is conducted on each child who is suspected
of having a disability. The child will be assessed in all areas
related to the suspected disability. The evaluation will be arranged
by an Evaluation Planning Team, consisting of the child’s teacher,
parent(s), and other people knowledgeable about the child.
The Evaluation Planning Team meets when a child is referred for an
evaluation and develops a plan for the evaluation. Within 60 calendar
days the team will meet again to determine eligibility based on the
evaluation.
A comprehensive evaluation is conducted before initial provision of
special education services to a child. Reevaluations are conducted at
least every three years, as warranted, or at the request of a parent or teacher.
When all necessary information is collected, the Evaluation Planning
Team will write a report for use in determining special education
eligibility. If a child is found to be eligible, the team will meet
shortly thereafter to prepare an Individual Education Plan.
A child’s parent(s) has specific rights in regard to special education
under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
(IDEIA). These rights are outlined in
Parents’ Rights in Special Education.
